Vic: Fire toll rises to 65 = 2

Deaths have now been reported in Marysville and Whittlesea.

Six more people were confirmed dead in St Andrews, taking the town's bushfire fatalities
to 11, while four more deaths were recorded in Kinglake West, sending the count to 10.

The death toll in Humevale rose to five, with two more fatalities confirmed.

One person is now confirmed dead at Marysville and three at Whittlesea.

The state's toll from the latest bushfire disaster has thus exceeded the number of

False Internet rumor keeps surfacing to dismay of black leaders

PAUL SHEPARD Associated Press Writer
AP Online
12-02-1998
WASHINGTON (AP) _ A sensational but false Internet-fueled rumor predicting black Americans will lose the right to vote in eight years is irritating black elected officials and voting rights advocates.

``It's amazing we even have to discuss this,'' political analyst David Bositis said with a sigh. ``To think that somehow black voters will lose the franchise is pretty preposterous.''

Even so, the rumor is being tossed around on talk radio and making the rounds in cyber-chatrooms.

The headline reads: ``URGENT! URGENT! URGENT!'' in thick black type and asks ``I was wondering if anyone out there knew what the significance of the year 2007 is to black America? Did you know our right to vote will expire in the year 2007? Seriously.''

But the unsigned Internet letter is wrong.

While Congress is to consider changes to the 1965 Voting Rights Act in 2007, the right of blacks to vote, ensured by the U.S. Constitution, won't be affected.

What could expire in eight years are parts of the Act's special provisions section requiring that Southern states get federal approval before changing certain state voting laws.

``The question for 2007 is whether federal oversight is needed for Southern states in elections - not if people can or can't vote,'' said Bositis, senior politics analyst for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in Washington.

``I'd say we have gotten hundreds of calls on this over the past two years,'' said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., incoming chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. ``It's frustrating dealing with this hoax.''

The Congressional Black Caucus held its own news conference this summer to denounce the rumor. But because his office is still getting calls, Clyburn said he wants the caucus to create its own Internet site to rebut the gossip.

``When people click on the rumor, I would like for them to be supplied with our information at the same time,'' Clyburn said. ``Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.''

What's distressing to many black leaders is that so many black people would give even a second thought to a claim that their voting rights will expire.

``I think this tells us how precarious African-Americans feel in their status in this society,'' Clyburn said. He said some people connected to his recent re-election campaign ``were talking about this and we had to pull them to the side and say, 'Stop spreading this story.'''

Tracking who first posted the rumor in cyberspace or when it began isn't easy.

Harold McDougall, a former NAACP Washington legislative director, said he first heard the story in the fall of 1996.

``The problem is this thing hasn't been checked,'' said McDougall, a Catholic University law professor. ``We haven't seen any big media announcement on it. When I first heard of it, I was embarrassed our people would fall for this.''

``This is a good example of why we need to know our history,'' McDougall said.

Bositis said the rumor's persistence could be rooted in the checkered history of black voting in America.

The 15th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1870, guaranteed suffrage for blacks, but some states devised ways to keep blacks from actually voting for close to a century.

``Intimidation was the most common weapon, but states also used grandfather clauses and literacy tests to keep blacks from voting,'' Bositis said. ``When they didn't want you to vote, you could have been a Harvard professor and still not passed their literacy tests.''

The rumor's durability prompted the Justice Department to take the unusual step of acknowledging the message to assert its fallacy, writing on the department's Web site: ``The rumor is false. The voting rights of African Americans are guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Voting Rights Act, and those guarantees are permanent and do not expire.''

NSW:Kidnapping, adbuctions rise in NSW

The latest New South Wales crime stats show there's been a 30 per cent jump in kidnappings
and abductions.

Recorded drug crime, particularly involving cannabis and amphetamines, has also shot
up in the 24 months to September.

However the number of recorded cocaine dealing and trafficking offences fell by almost
50 per cent.

The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research figures show the arrests for possession
or use of the drug were stable.

NSW Police Commissioner ANDREW SCIPIONE says the rise in cannabis possession and cannabis
related offences is partly due to targeted operations.

The increase in kidnappings and abductions has been blamed partly on numbers rising
from a lull in the 12 months to September 2010.

VIC:GST cut to cost health system $700m: Davis

The BAILLIEU government says around 700 million dollars will be ripped out of Victoria's
health system over the next four years if the flagged cuts to the state's GST revenue
goes ahead.

Last month the Commonwealth Grants Commission recommended the government slash Victoria's
GST funding by 500 million dollars in the next financial year.

The Victorian government is lobbying the Commonwealth to delay any decision on the
recommended cut until after a review of how the tax is carved up between the states.

Health Minister DAVID DAVIS said the slated cut would have a dramatic impact on the
state's health system.

VIC:Youth detention for rail thug

A young thug who was part of a "terrifying" attack in which a Good Samaritan was hit
by a rock at a Melbourne train station has been sentenced to youth detention.

19 year old MATTHEW SIMON HAMILTON-HOLT has been ordered to serve two years in a Youth
Justice Centre .. which was the maximum sentence available to the magistrate.

Hobart man TIM REDMOND was a passenger on a packed Frankston-bound train when he was
felled by a piece of ballast that struck him in the head at McKinnon station in June this
year.

He had tried to intervene after a group of youths caused havoc on the train.

Police say the violence started when a drunken HAMILTON-HOLT began yelling obscenities
at a passenger.

Mr REDMOND was bashed when he tried to help another passenger.

He was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery for a brain clot.

Qld: Doomadgee inquest won't rule out accidental death

BRISBANE, Dec 21 AAP - A pre-inquest hearing into the death of Cameron Doomadgee has
knocked back a submission from the Queensland Attorney-General Cameron Dick to rule out
accidental death.

Mr Doomadgee died in custody at the Palm Island police station off the Townsville coast
in far north Queensland five years ago after being arrested for being drunk and causing
a nuisance.

An earlier inquest found Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley responsible for Mr Doomadgee's
fatal injuries but the officer was cleared of manslaughter in 2007.

The inquest into how he died has been re-opened and a new coroner has been appointed
to re-examine evidence into whether Sen Sgt Hurley was responsible for Mr Doomadgee's
death.

The attorney-general's submission called for accidental death to be ruled out, a pre-inquest
at the Brisbane Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

Sen Sgt Hurley's lawyer Glen Cranny argued the attorney-general's involvement was unnecessary.

Coroner Brian Hines rejected the attorney-general's submission.

"I must say I don't feel that it's possible to rule out accident at this stage until
I have heard all of the evidence," he said.

Another pre-inquest hearing will be held on February 5.

The inquest will start on March 8 at Palm Island before moving to Townsville.

Sen Sgt Hurley may appear via video-link from Brisbane, as his partner is expected
to give birth around that time, the court heard.

SA: Drug ring uncovered in SA prison

ADELAIDE, April 2 AAP - A drug trafficking operation has been uncovered in South Australia's
Mobilong Prison with six inmates suspected of organising the trade.

The prisoners, including two with known links to bikie gangs, have been moved from
Mobilong, east of Adelaide, to the high security Yatala Prison.

They are suspected of organising drug deals both inside and outside Mobilong, and using
standover tactics against other prisoners.

Investigations into the drug operation are continuing.

Correctional Services Minister Tom Koutsantonis said on Thursday that Mobilong Prison
was locked down on Wednesday and all 319 inmates were strip-searched.

Cells were also raided with officers finding various items of contraband including
a mobile phone hidden inside a clock radio, razor blades, a knife, tattoo equipment, illicit
medication and home-brewed beer.

"This is the largest security operation undertaken at a South Australian prison in
the last 10 years," Mr Koutsantonis said.

"This operation has ensured greater safety for everyone within Mobilong Prison and
protects the public from the illegal activities of these convicted criminals."

The minister said the public should not be surprised that some convicted criminals
continued to break the law even after they were locked up.

"Our objective is to detect crime and contraband to protect prisoners from themselves
and keep the public safe," he said.

"It's encouraging to find that relatively few contraband items were confiscated in
this raid, compared to previous operations.

"It's a sign of the success of our enhanced prison security measures."

WA: MP urges Gandhi-like protest about bush services

By Liza Kappelle

PERTH, Aug 8 AAP - A National Party MP is urging a Mahatma Gandhi-like campaign of
civil disobedience in Western Australia to protest the axing of public services in the
bush.

Max Trenorden, member for Avon, says six country police stations were recently closed
in the Wheatbelt and there is a proposal afoot to downgrade a hospital.

He wants people to highlight grievances about losing services in the bush by increased
reporting of crime and health complaints.

"I am not saying break the law but to stretch it as far as you can," Mr Trenorden said.

"Services are driven by statistics. When you see someone unusual walking past the back
lane, ring the police.

"When the kids are sick with a cold, take them to hospital.

"What I am saying is if you want these services you can't be silent about it, you have
to make a protest, like Mahatma Gandhi did with his civil disobedience."

Mr Trenorden said he was frustrated about his dwindling ability to represent his electorate
following the passing of Labor's one-vote one-value laws that ended vote weighting in
favour of rural votes and slashed the number of country seats.

"I have an enormous list of grievances at a time when things should be going okay.

Since the advent of one-vote one-value, the Labor government has just turned off the tap
to regional areas."

National Party members from southern Albany are also urging a form of civil disobedience
- they want members to ignore daylight saving when the second leg of a three-year trial
begins later this year.

WA Premier Alan Carpenter said he could not take Mr Trenorden's proposal seriously.

"What he's suggesting is bizarre, almost lunatic, and to associate his name in that
way with Mahatma Gandhi, is quite remarkable," Mr Carpenter said.

"Some country towns are going to have their schools closed, are going to have their
services taken away as their populations decline, that has always been the case.

"But look Max is under pressure, he's fighting for his political survival, pre-selection
for the National Party ... Max trying to establish his bona fides as a candidate."

NSW: Iemma's no fool when it comes to campaign strategy

AAP General News (Australia)

NSW: Iemma's no fool when it comes to campaign strategy

By Peter Jean, State Political Reporter

SYDNEY, Feb 15 AAP - NSW Premier Morris Iemma is no fool when it comes to election
campaign strategy.

NSW Labor powerbrokers decided 18 months ago to install the then health minister as premier.

The state's 4.3 million enrolled voters will decide on March 24 whether to let Mr Iemma
keep the job or to replace him with coalition leader Peter Debnam.

Mr Iemma and Mr Debnam are due to square off this Friday night in the first televised
campaign leaders' debate in NSW history.

On Sunday, Mr Iemma will officially launch Labor's bid for a fourth consecutive four-year
term in office at an event in Hurstville, in south-western Sydney.

The scheduling of the Labor campaign launch for two days after the only election debate
is no coincidence.

The Friday evening timeslot for the election debate on ABC Television's Stateline program
virtually guarantees a relatively small audience - something Mr Iemma was aware of when
he dictated the terms for the event.

By contrast, a big audience will see the highlights of the campaign launch when they
tune into the Sunday night news bulletins, which are among the most watched television
programs each week.

Mr Iemma is a strong parliamentary debater, less comfortable performing at press conferences
and, of course, has no experience at a televised leaders' debate.

Mr Debnam has some experience with televised debates, having gone head-to-head with
Treasurer Michael Costa on Stateline last year.

A strong performance by Mr Iemma in the debate, followed by the Sunday launch, will
see Labor's campaign build momentum.

If Mr Debnam does a better job in the debate, Mr Iemma will be hoping the release of
some popular policies at the Labor launch will get his campaign back on track.

In recent years, party campaign launches have been held two to three weeks before election day.

The March 24 election date is set by law and dictates that Mr Iemma call upon Governor
Marie Bashir in early March to formally advise her to issue writs for the poll.

Holding the launch this weekend is a symbolic way for Labor to bring the campaign period
to an early but informal start.

Rodney Smith, a senior lecturer in Australian politics at the University of Sydney,
says Mr Iemma's decision to wage a long campaign reflects the fact Labor doesn't expect
an easy win.

"The Labor Party thinks they can't just cruise in with a non-campaign," he said.

Mr Debnam says the Labor launch is just a "media event" and he has been campaigning
for 18 months.

He has been in full-time campaign mode since early January and has already released
dozens of policies.

While Labor's campaign is also well underway, Mr Iemma has been keeping his powder
dry and holding off most of his election promises for the five-week campaign period, beginning
this weekend.

Labor luminaries like former premiers Bob Carr, Barry Unsworth and Neville Wran haven't
been invited to the Labor campaign launch.

Mr Iemma says it will be a low-key event, with guests to include his family, people
he grew up with in south-west Sydney, local community leaders and hospital staff he worked
with as health minister.

The premier says he has great respect for his predecessor Mr Carr and has invited him
to other campaign events.

But it's clear Mr Iemma wants attention at the launch to be focused on his own achievements
as premier and not on the successes or failures of the Carr government, in which he served
as a senior minister.

"This is an election about what I have done in the last 17 (sic) months and what I
plan to do over the next four years," Mr Iemma said this week.

Mr Iemma has worked out his strategy and is now ready to see if it works in practice.

WA: Rejected husband kills wife who refused to take him back

By Liza Kappelle

PERTH, Aug 29 AAP - A Perth man stabbed his estranged wife more than 50 times before
bashing in her skull with a cricket bat when she refused to take him back, a court has
heard.

Illiterate wool industry worker Leslie Shortte, 57, was today sentenced to life imprisonment
by the West Australian Supreme Court for the wilful murder of Kylie Jane Shortte, 45,
on December 29, 2005.

Shortte earlier pleaded guilty to killing his wife of 12 years just three weeks after
she told him to leave because she no longer loved him.

The sentencing hearing today was told Shortte spent the three weeks drinking and brooding
over his wife's suspected infidelity before going to their Bibra Lake home to beg her
to take him back.

Prosecutor Sandra Demaio told the court Shortte took along a length of coaxial cable
and a gardening glove intending to "give her a couple of whacks" if she refused.

But instead he punched her in the face, dragged her by the hair to an ensuite bathroom
and stabbed her with a pair of open scissors, causing 110 mostly superficial wounds to
her arms, back and legs.

"He said that she was crying, but he just could not stop," Ms Demaio said.

Shortte then dragged his wife to the foyer near the front door where he picked up a
cricket bat and bashed her six times in the head, killing her.

The court was told the blows were so hard the bat split.

Ms Shortte's hands were fractured and two of her fingertips were severed as she tried
to ward off the blows that fractured her skull, lacerating her brain.

Justice Geoffrey Miller told Shortte he had committed "a shocking crime, a brutal senseless
crime".

"She must have suffered a terrible death," the judge said.

The judge told the sobbing man he accepted his remorse was genuine.

But he also considered victim impact statements such as one from Ms Shortte's 21-year-old
son, who found his mother's body and still suffered nightmares.

Justice Miller sentenced Shortte to life in prison with a minimum of 17 years to be
served before parole.

Outside the court Detective Sargeant Brett Randford said Ms Shortte's family were devastated
but the result had given them some closure.

"It is an end of a sad chapter of their lives," he said.

SYDNEY, April 23 AAP - A man who was told he would be sacked if he took time off work
to attend the birth of his child is among 15,000 callers to a NSW government hotline in
the wake of the federal government's workplace reforms.

The Fair Go Advisory Service, open for just four weeks, had primarily received calls
from workers who had lost entitlements, NSW Industrial Relations Minister John Della Bosca

"A number of those calling had been dismissed without notice or explanation, and many
more were facing the sack if they complained about contracts that stripped away award
wages," Mr Della Bosca said.

"We are doing all we can under NSW laws to protect and support workers but it's clear
Work Choices has made it (a) free-for-all for many unscrupulous employers."

Broomfield, Colo.-Based Health Products Firm Posts $23.9 Million in Revenues.

By Katie Ford, Daily Camera, Boulder, Colo. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Oct. 30--Gaiam founder Jirka Rysavy is banking on the consumer's quest for natural products -- and seeing results.

In its third quarter earnings report Monday, Gaiam, which sells health and lifestyle products, reported net sales of $23.9 million, an increase of 76 percent over sales of $13.6 million reported for the third quarter last year.

Gaiam's net income for the third quarter increased to $969,000 from $579,000 during the same period last year. Earnings per share increased 43 percent to 7 cents per share for the third quarter of 2001, up from 5 cents per share for the third quarter ended September 30, 2000.

Net income for the first nine months of 2001 increased to $1.9 million from $983,000 for the first nine months of 2000.

"We are pleased to say again that it was another good quarter," Rysavy said.

Gaiam (Nasdaq: GAIA) performed at analysts expectations, with analysts polled by Thompson Financial/First Call expecting earnings of 7 cents per share. On Monday its stock closed at $15.15 down 3.5 percent.

The Lohas, or lifestyles of health and sustainability, market represented a $226.8 billion U.S. market and an estimated $546 billion global market in 2000, according to Boulder-based Natural Business Communications which publishes the Lohas Journal.

Gaiam said it continues to accelerate its branding of its products which are sold through over 25,000 retailers.

"Continued strong acceptance across our retailer channel contributed significantly to our internal growth," said president Lynn Powers.

She said Gaiam's store-within-a-store concept that the company launched at the end of the third quarter last year continues to be a success. Gaiam signed some new retail accounts during third quarter including Sports Authority and Books A Million as well as maintaining sales through Target and Whole Foods.

So far, Rysavy said the attacks on Sept. 11 did not have a large effect on the company. The week after the attacks he said business was down about 10 percent, with the Internet business suffering the most.

Rysavy said Gaiam welcomes competition in the Lohas market, such as Nike's new line of yoga-related wear.

"We'd like to see them spending more dollars because they provide more visibility (for the Lohas market)," he said.

In July, Yudi Bahl became Gaiam's chief financial officer. He has experience in the Lohas market, covering it for the last four years at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray, recently as vice president and senior research analyst.

At the end of September, Gaiam purchased the remaining 49.9 percent interest in its two renewable energy businesses that it did not own previously, thus eliminating the minority interest in these businesses effective October 1.

Nuera's IP Telephony Gateway Wins BCR Magazine's Coveted ``Best in Test'' Award over Cisco, Ascend and Others.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 4, 1999--Business Communications Review (BCR) magazine's January, 1999 issue published the results of Mier Communications' second head-to-head evaluation of IP telephony gateways, and for the second time Nuera Communications topped the list of vendors rated in the competition.

In the most recent test, Nuera outperformed Cisco, Ascend, Clarent and Hypercom to achieve the highest overall rating based on configuration, installation and ease of use, features, management and administration, performance and price performance.

Previous IP telephony gateway testing at Mier Communications, the results of which were published in BCR's January, 1998 issue, awarded Nuera Best in Test honors over Lucent, Nortel and Selsius.

In addition to the top overall score, Nuera garnered top ratings for lowest latency and richest feature set. End-to-end delays measured by Mier were 62 milliseconds, lowest in the test and well below the designated "telco standard" of 100 milliseconds. Nuera's performance in the features category was driven by support for voice, fax and transparent modem relay as well as the NueraView Network Management System, offering "easy access to key settings and configuration parameters."

Mier Communications, noting that "Nuera's victory is well deserved," also awarded Nuera's F200ip Mier's "Recommended Buy" status.

According to Nuera's Director of Product Marketing, Glen Gerhard, "We're pleased that the results confirm Nuera's commitment to deliver top-rated technology which allows network operators to succeed in the competitive telecommunications market. We'll celebrate this award from Mier and BCR as Nuera customers celebrate their victories in the field with satisfied users and aggressive growth in revenue and profitability. After two years of achieving top ratings in every packet voice test published and of supporting successful deployment of our systems around the world, we're not crossing the finish line -- in fact, we're just getting warmed up. In future announcements, we will outline the work Nuera has been doing to ensure interoperability with other vendors in an open-ended network, even as we outperform them across Nuera-specific connections such as these tested by Mier and reported in BCR."

About Nuera

Nuera Communications provides network operators and OEM customers with the industry's best IP telephony and voice over frame relay products and technology.

Nuera's standards-plus approach combines industry standards for carrier-class voice over IP and frame relay with proprietary enhancements to achieve standards-based interoperability while still allowing users to maintain a competitive edge in cost, quality, reliability and delivery of new features and services. Nuera's products optimize bandwidth utilization while maintaining superb quality for transmission of voice, fax and data traffic.

Nuera's products have twice received BCR magazine's Best in Test award for voice over IP in head-to-head tests against vendors including Cisco, Lucent, Nortel and Ascend. Nuera has also received Data Communications magazine's Hot Product award for top quality voice over frame relay, and Editors' Choice and Product of the Year honors from Internet Telephony and Computer Telephony magazines.

Utherverse Hosts and Provides a Once-in-a-Lifetime Chance to Virtually Participate in and Attend the Royal Wedding Over Its 50,000 Site Virtual World Web VWW Network.

While this Friday's Royal Wedding of Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton is expected to be the most watched event in television history, members of Utherverse, the creator of the Virtual World Web (VWW), have the opportunity to virtually attend and, if they so desire, actually participate as one of five Royal Family members, including the bride and groom.

Utherverse's hosting of the virtual Royal Wedding, as well as a post-ceremony reception and after party, marks the debut of the Vancouver, B.C.-based company's use of technology allowing the creation of avatars that resemble real people; in this case, Prince William, Kate Middleton, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Camilla Parker-Bowles and the inimitable Charlie Sheen, among other surprise after-party guests.

Virtual Royal Wedding attendees who invest a $20 (US) monthly fee to become Utherverse VIP members can "become" any of these five Royal Family members; "commoner" event attendees are welcome simply by registering and downloading the required software at: www.princewillswedding.com.

The VWW has 7 million PC and Mac users that use Utherverse's downloadable 3D Web browser to navigate a network encompassing 57,000 virtual 3D communities where members interact, socialize and conduct business in ways not possible on the "flat" Internet.

Brian Shuster, Utherverse founder and CEO, views this virtual groundbreaking event as the perfect setting for attendees to meet in the romantic atmosphere afforded by the grandest wedding of all time. "From the ceremony itself, and the exclusive setting of the wedding reception and party, the virtual Royal Wedding provides the unique opportunity for guests to meet and let their hair down in a safe environment," he said. "It will be quite like a virtual masquerade ball where people are free to openly communicate and express themselves.

"Where else for $20 can you become a virtual Royal Family member, or at no cost, attend the Royal Wedding?" Shuster asked, noting that significant numbers of Utherverse members regularly meet in-person, approximately 1,000 of whom got married in 2010 alone.

Just as the World Wide Web is comprised of websites, the VWW is made up of virtual worlds where users of the sophisticated, interactive virtual spaces have videogame-like avatars, although in this case everybody's a real person. Avatars/real people in the virtual Utherverse engage in real experiences, such as shopping for clothing that can actually be purchased and shipped. They can visit communities like the company's Virtual-Vancouver, which, in addition to shopping, includes nightlife, dating, concert and other kinds of satisfying venues and types of experiences such as those enabled by Utherverse's 3Dtunes.com interactive karaoke platform.

Some members also routinely attend otherwise unreachable virtual parties held in all four corners of the Earth.

A virtual Royal Wedding preview that provides a flavor for the event can be viewed at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4LaXr4Hca4.

Shuster sees the virtual Royal Wedding as the first in a virtually limitless array of celebrity focused member events utilizing Utherverse's enhanced avatar technology. "We're continually keeping our eyes and ears open for new things, world and celebrity news and developments to inspire future virtual experiences," he said.

For example, he envisions parody inspired events engaging members' avatars with those of political figures including President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin. "Just think of some of the heated discussions that members can participate in," Shuster noted.

ANDERSON SENDS LETTER TO GOOGLE CEO OVER ISSUES WITH FISMA CERTIFICATION.

SACRAMENTO, CA -- The following information was released by California State Senator Dennis Hollingsworth:

Dear Mr. Page:

As a member of the California State Senate who sits on the Senate Sub-Committee on Privacy, and is very interested in internet security issues, I respectfully request that you clarify your company's position on the claims made in recent news stories about Google.

It is my understanding that while attempting to secure operating contracts with government agencies, Google stated on a marketing page that its "Google Apps for Government" platform had been certified by the General Service Administration to be in accordance with security standards promulgated by the Federal Information Security Management Act. Recently, it has been asserted this claim was a misrepresentation, and "Google Apps for Government" is not, in fact, officially certified.

The Los Angeles Times reported: "Google said that the consumer and business versions of its office software -- Google Apps -- did receive the federal certification in July, and that its government version is essentially the same product, only with further security enhancements." Would you please clarify whether or not the "Google Apps for Government" platform, specifically, has been certified to meet security standards set forth in the FISMA by the GSA, as stated on your company's website?

Secondly, a recent article in Politico reported concerns over "whether Google's email service, Gmail, has the security features necessary for [Los Angeles'] 13,000 police department employees, among others." What inadequate security features, if any, prevent the migration of these employees to the Gmail system?

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Joel Anderson

Senator

Traumatised staff need special consideration, leadership and guidance.

Everyone in the business community feels for their Cantabrian counterparts and the enormous challenges they are overcoming every day to stay in business. And even when all the logistics are back to normal, they will be dealing with traumatised staff who cannot just swing back into action after what they have been through.

My staff have been through a harrowing natural disaster where they have feared for the lives of their families and their homes. How do employers help their staff through this kind of trauma?

Employers will have tremendous pressure upon them. If they own the business then they are probably seeing the business they worked so hard for, crumble to dust within a few seconds. The focus of the manager is to get the business up and running again, yet they also have to consider one of the most important assets, their staff.

Be there, be supportive and tell them how it is. Do not try to cover up the truth and if you do not know something, say so. The manager needs to provide leadership and guidance in such an event and they should also assign a second level team to provide advice and assistance to personnel. Let this second level team do the day to day support and guidance while the manager provides the decisions and direction. Although the survival of the business is critical to everyone, staff are absolutely crucial and they are part of your business family. You will find that for the extra effort you make for your staff, not only in terms of monetary or physical support, but consideration at a personal level to them, you will get back several times over with loyalty and appreciation.

Should we bring in counsellors to help staff recover?

If your business had been badly hit and your personnel have seen things they should never have to see, such as people badly injured and killed, I think it would be prudent to make available a counselling service. Make sure your counsellors are qualified and trained to give advice and are appropriate for your people. Give consideration to their background, race and religion.

The signs you should look for in someone who needs counselling are that they want to be by themselves, they are not talking about the incident, are showing uncharacteristic behaviour, and they complain of lack of sleep and flashbacks. I would not force them to use the company-assigned counselling service, but I would make the offer. If they prefer to use their own, that is fine. If you force them to use someone they do not want to, and the counselling makes them feel worse, you and your company will be blamed for it.

We have some staff overseas, how do we keep them in the loop?

Email, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, use whatever electronic media you can to communicate with them. Make sure all messages are copied to them. This should be part of the role of your communications team. If they have skills that can be used, for example answering customers' queries, make them the first responders over email or by phone. They are probably sweeping the New Zealand newspapers websites, listening to the internet, radio and watching streaming TV. That is fine, it is keeping them up to date but they will be stressed. Your overseas employees will be working with clients who may not realise the personal anguish they are going through, so the employee needs to be able to cope with this.

AutoTrader.com to Raise Money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital(R).

Longtime Charity Partner Will Benefit from Exposure to The Millions Who Visit AutoTrader.com Each Month

ATLANTA, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- AutoTrader.com will use the power of its site, which attracts about 15 million unique monthly visitors, to help raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Beginning November 16, visitors to AutoTrader.com will see display ads throughout the site illustrating the research and treatment hospital in Memphis, Tenn., with a "Donate Now" button. Also, individuals who purchase an advertisement to sell a vehicle on AutoTrader.com will have the opportunity to donate to St. Jude as they purchase the ad.

"AutoTrader.com has partnered with St. Jude in numerous ways since 2002," said AutoTrader.com President and CEO Chip Perry. "All of us really believe strongly in the mission of St. Jude and wanted to take our involvement and support of this terrific organization to the next level."

Since 2002, AutoTrader.com has supported St. Jude through a variety of channels and initiatives, including:

-- AutoTrader.com has hosted more than 200 golf tournaments across the country benefiting St. Jude. These tournaments have raised more than $1 million for the research hospital. -- AutoTrader.com employees volunteer about 4,000 hours per year on St. Jude fundraising projects, including staging and hosting charity golf tournaments, working directly with the hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and participating in St. Jude "Give thanks" Walks. -- St. Jude has been a charity of choice for the AutoTrader.com employee giving campaign for the past four years. -- In 2009, for each dealer survey an AutoTrader.com dealer customer completes, AutoTrader.com donated $1 to St. Jude. This program resulted in approximately $4,000 donated to St. Jude.

This new campaign will run through December 31, 2009. The advertising running throughout the AutoTrader.com site features actual St. Jude patients. On the Private Seller package page, the donation amount is $5. People making a donation with their purchase of an ad will get an additional six photos for their ad at no extra cost. For those who don't want to make a donation, they will have the opportunity to opt out and purchase an ad without the donation. Visitors to AutoTrader.com wishing to donate more can contact St. Jude directly through phone, email and web information provided on AutoTrader.com. One hundred percent of the donations will go directly to St. Jude.

"We wanted to make it as easy as possible for visitors to our site to learn more about St. Jude and help out with a donation if they so chose," said Melanie Kovach, AutoTrader.com Senior Director and General Manager of Private Seller Advertising. "And a little really does go a long way. For example, it costs $3 for a chest X-Ray, $5 for a spinal tap and $8 for a day of oxygen for a St. Jude patient. These donations will add up quickly and coupled with what AutoTrader.com donates as a company, will really make a difference for St. Jude."

"We are thrilled that AutoTrader.com is expanding their partnership to support St. Jude," said Kristine Templin, Senior Director, Corporate Partnerships of ALSAC, the fundraising organization of St. Jude. "Their dedication will make a difference in the lives of so many children and their families and will enable us to carry on our mission that no child should die in the dawn of life."

About St. Jude

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is the nation's leading pediatric research and treatment center devoted solely to children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases and the only pediatric cancer research center that covers all of the costs for treatment, travel, food, and lodging for a patient and a family member. Children come to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital from across the country and around the world, and no child is ever turned away because of family's inability to pay. Since its inception, St. Jude has developed protocols that have helped push survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent to more than 80 percent overall. When St. Jude opened in 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, was 4 percent. Today, the survival rate is 94 percent thanks to the research and treatment protocols developed at St. Jude. Research findings at St. Jude are freely shared with doctors and scientists all over the world, and the work being done at St. Jude impacts the lives of children in communities everywhere.

True/False, Ragtag rolling into future.

Byline: Pete Bland

Aug. 17--Of all the questions thrown the way of Paul Sturtz these days, the one that the Ragtag Cinema and True/False Film Festival "co-instigator" most often catches comes in the form of something along the lines of, "So, when's the new place gonna be ready?"

As Sturtz mentioned yesterday during an appearance on KFRU/1400 AM with David Lile, he has learned to curb his enthusiasm a bit when it comes to predicting a date for Ragtag's final move to its ameliorated digs at the old Kelly Press building on Hitt Street. With some encouragement from his collaborators, he now makes a point of going out of his way to be more noncommittal, saying only that the relocation initially announced in late 2005 will occur "sometime next year."

You see, hopes are high for the facility, as well they should be. For Ragtag and True/False are riding a wave of good fortune that is taking their brand names to New York, Chicago and beyond in the weeks and months to come.

Before Sturtz and David Wilson, his partner in the delivery of quality cinema to Columbia, head to next month's Toronto International Film Festival, they will help Ragtag embark on an unprecedented Missouri Theatre engagement for "Little Miss Sunshine" -- see the brief review on Page 4. The feel-good indie summer hit will play at the movie house at 6 and 8:15 p.m. tomorrow, 5:30 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. Aug. 25.

The two also are looking forward to the True/False Goes New York event that will take place next week at the IFC Center in Manhattan. The showcase will feature three films from the documentary festival's third and most recent installment, with "Chalk" screening Monday and "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "The Last Supper" showing Tuesday.

"Murderball" co-director Dana Adam Shapiro will be on hand Monday to interview "Chalk" director Mike Akel. And on Tuesday, Sarah Price -- one of the forces behind "American Movie," "The Yes Men" and "Summercamp!" -- will lead a discussion with "Prince" director Marc Isaacs and "Supper" co-helmer Lars BergstrA[paragraph]m.

On Aug. 29, the Passport Series -- an exclusive cycle of foreign films -- begins at Ragtag with "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu," which also plays on Aug. 30. Other films on the Passport schedule: "Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul" (Sept. 12 and 13), "Three Times" (Sept. 19 and 20), "Water" (Sept. 26 and 27), "Only Human" (Oct. 3 and 4), "Heading South" (Oct. 10 and 11), "Army of Shadows" (Oct. 17 and 18), "Sisters in Law" (Oct. 24 and 25), "Lunacy" (Oct. 31 and Nov. 1) and "The House of Sand" (Nov. 14 and 15).

Then on Oct. 26, True/False will hit the Chicago area to host a screening of "The Refugee All Stars" at the Third Coast International Audio Festival, which has brought its product to the Columbia fest on a couple of occasions. Co-director Banker White will be in attendance at a yet-to-be-determined location in Evanston, Ill.

Also, earlier this year, Sundance Film Festival organizers announced a partnership with 14 independent theaters across the country, giving them the opportunity to host special screenings of both more recent festival features and some Sundance classics. Ragtag was one of the lucky cinemas selected to take part in The Sundance Institute Art House Project, and it will bring the spirit of True/False to its offerings by presenting four documentaries October-December.

To help celebrate Sundance's 25th season, "Hoop Dreams" -- accompanied by director Steve James and possibly either Arthur Agee or William Gates, the film's main subjects -- and "Crumb," with director Terry Zwigoff in tow, will play Oct. 20 and Nov. 10, respectively, at the Missouri Theatre. And "Paris is Burning," along with director Jennie Livingston, and "American Movie" -- with Mark Borchardt's best buddy, Mike Schank, on hand -- will be at Ragtag. "Paris" kicks everything off Oct. 6, and "American Movie" closes the festivities Dec. 2.

Finally, with fresh Missouri Arts Council and other grant funds in pocket, Sturtz and Wilson are busy at work on Round 4 of True/False, which is slated for March 1-4 next year.

Queries on where, exactly, Ragtag will be then seem to be moot. As it is, there's too much to enjoy right now.

For more information on all of the above, visit www.truefalse.org and www.ragtagfilm.com.

We wouldn't be a respectable publication if we went without mentioning the premiere of Internet sensation "Snakes on a Plane" somewhere other than just in the movie listings. It opens with special screenings at 10 tonight at Stadium 14 and Forum 8 before beginning a full run tomorrow.

TW faces the music and tunes out.(Time Warner)

A financially fortified Time Warner will start paying a cash dividend again and is sweet once more on AOL, but there's one business it's tuning out for good--music.

TW has cashed out its option in Warner Music Group, which went public earlier this month in a lackluster initial public offering.

"We're not going to go back into music," Time Warner chair-CEO Richard Parsons told reporters Friday following the conglom's annual shareholder meeting in Gotham.

While there was plenty of obligatory griping from shareholders at the lengthy gathering--held in a jazz theater at Time Warner Center--it was tame in comparison to the meetings held in the aftermath of the ill-fated AOL/Time Warner marriage, when AOL collapsed, dragging down TW with it.

Playing host to hundreds of shareholders. Parsons said the 5 cents per share quarterly cash dividend reflected the conglom's financial recovery. Time Warner stopped paying a dividend after the merger.

Parsons also confirmed that he would consider spinning off AOL under certain circumstances but stressed there is no plan in place. He said AOL is reinventing itself into a valuable member of the Time Warner team.

"Does it make sense for (AOL) to have a currency of its own? We've concluded there's no need for it now," said Parsons, adding that if AOL were ever spun off, Time Warner would retain control.

He said AOL could be spun off if the Internet biz becomes consolidated. In that event. AOL could use access to the capital markets, allowing it to pursue acquisitions.

TW remains on track to spin off Time Warner Cable once the bid to buy up bankrupt cabler Adelphia is sealed. Spinoffs are suddenly all the rage in the media biz, as frustrated execs try to "unlock" value and rescue what they say are discounted stock prices.

No backward glance

While Parsons was aglow over the cable and Internet biz, he showed no angst over the decision to shed the Warner Music option.

Time Warner, which sold the music operation to Edgar Bronfman and a consortium of private investors last year, had the option of buying a 15% stake as part of Warner Music's IPO.

Some Wall Streeters believed that Time Warner would indeed exercise that option, particularly when Parsons recently said he missed the music biz.

TW sold the option back to Warner Music for $140 million.

Parsons, who is widely respected for navigating the conglom through tortured times, was easily re-elected to another board term, as were all other board members, including Ted Turner and former AOL topper Steve Case.

Swept into office were new board members Jessica Einhorn, dean of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced Intl. Studies at John Hopkins U., and Deborah Wright, chair-CEO of Carver Bancorp, the country's largest bank operated by African- and Caribbean-Americans.

Still, a deft Parsons was forced to take his share of abuse from cranky shareholders vexed by executive compensation.

Unmoved by the new dividend, they said Parsons' total pay package last year, valued at $16 million, didn't make sense given a stagnant stock price.

Time Warner's stock price has tumbled more than 70% since 2001.

"I don't like all this money going to yon and your cohorts. Don't tell me you're going to give me a nickel. I don't want your nickel," one animated shareholder told Parsons, demanding the dividend be upped to at least $2.

Parsons assured shareholders that no one is happy with where the stock is, but said if "we stick to our guns and we stick to our knitting," value will be restored.

New dividend could play a valuable role in boosting share price by making Time Warner stock available to funds that invest only in companies that pay dividends, Parsons said.

The dividend--approved by the board one day before the shareholder sesh--reflects Time Warner's strong balance sheet, robust free cash flow and growth prospects, he said. The first dividend will be paid in September.

Wall Street analyst Jessica Reif Cohen of Merrill Lynch said the dividend fell short of investor expectations and that Time Warner could afford a higher dividend.

Even with the acquisition of Adelphia, Time Warner could return nearly $16 billion to shareholders by the end of 2006 and still remain within its leverage guidelines, Reif Cohen wrote in a note.

Parsons estimated the 5 cents dividend would cost the company roughly $1 billion per year.

But Reif Cohen said Time Warner would need to be "more aggressive if it truly wants to catch investor interest and drive its stock price." She said a "substantial share-buyback program could go a long way" toward achieving this goal.

TW stock didn't enjoy any boost after the Turner dividend was announced early Friday. Shares fell 14 cents in trading to close at $17.61.

Salary study nixed

Back at Time Warner Center, the majority of shareholders sided with the TW board in voting down a resolution that would have required the conglom to study the salary disparity between top execs and employees.

"We try in this company to be as transparent as we can. We are not afraid of revealing information. This resolution isn't appropriate or useful," Parsons said. "There is more information than you can shake a stick at."

Shareholders were treated to several movie trailers with Warner Bros. Entertainment chair-CEO Barry Meyer sitting in the and, including one for WB's summer tentpole "Batman Begins."

But the folk hero of the day was the real-life Turner, who needed no introduction, according to Parsons.

"Ted Turner--that's all I'm going to say," Parsons said. "If you're from this planet, you know who he is."

FLORES VOTES TO DEFUND NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO.

WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by the office of Texas Rep. Bill Flores:

U.S. Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) released the following statement today regarding his vote for H.R. 1076 to end government funding for NPR, formerly National Public Radio:

"With more than 99 percent of Americans owning a TV and more than 95 being Internet-accessible, it is clear that the mission of ensuring universal access has been fulfilled and government-funded broadcasting is completely unnecessary. Even a former National Public Radio executive recently admitted that the organization 'would be better off in the long run without federal funding.' It's past time that NPR competes in the regular markets for all of its income like all other media organizations.

"In this struggling economy, forcing wasteful or defective government programs onto the backs hard-working American taxpayers is completely unacceptable. That is why I voted today to ban federal funding for NPR. Another vote to cut spending represents another step the House has taken towards putting Americans back to work and putting our economy back on a fiscally sustainable course for the future."

FirstBank Fights Back Against Cybercrime With Webroot Subsidiary Prevx; Powerful security software, Prevx SafeOnline, protects customers from increasingly intelligent online fraud attacks.

M2 PRESSWIRE-March 7, 2011-: FirstBank Fights Back Against Cybercrime With Webroot Subsidiary Prevx; Powerful security software, Prevx SafeOnline, protects customers from increasingly intelligent online fraud attacks(C)1994-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

RDATE:07032011

Bracknell, -- Webroot, the first Internet security service company, today announced that its subsidiary Prevx has partnered with Tennessee-based FirstBank to offer all its customers free protection from online fraud with the Prevx SafeOnline Internet security solution.

Following a review of lab tests of several products, FirstBank selected Prevx SafeOnline due to its comprehensive approach to addressing the rapidly increasing trend of online bank account take overs by highly sophisticated malware. As part of the Prevx SafeOnline Partner Program, FirstBank will offer the software to its customers, giving them increased confidence when using its online banking services by protecting against online fraud attacks such as phishing, DNS poisoning, screen grabbing, man-in-the-browser and keystroke logging.

Over the past three years, FirstBank, as well as the entire industry, has had an increased number of account compromise incidents with its online banking customers. There appears to be an increased level of sophistication in the malware itself, e.g. attacks such as the notorious Zeus Trojan were evading detection from a customer's existing antivirus solution and harvesting information such as the user's surfing history and passwords.

"Online services are becoming increasingly popular with our customers," said Clark Cummings, FirstBank senior vice president and director of risk management. "Therefore maintaining their trust and confidence is vital. In order to combat the ever more intelligent threats deployed by cybercriminals, we needed to put in place an added layer of protection; but the challenge was knowing how to differentiate one solution from another. We'd spoken to a number of vendors but what confirmed it for us was the breadth and depth of protection SafeOnline offered compared to other solutions."

FirstBank customers can now download Prevx SafeOnline technology at no cost, and the software can run alongside any existing security solution the user is running. This multilayer approach to security ensures all personal information, including passwords and payment card details, is protected at all times while using the Internet.

In addition, the new technology will provide reporting that will allow FirstBank to take proactive measures to reduce the level of risk posed to its customer base.

Landy Dutton, FirstBank vice president and operational risk manager, said, "This is the first time we've had evidence of the threats facing our customers and the bank. The Prevx malware intelligence is crucial in helping us to understand the level of risk to the Internet banking customer so preventive measures can be taken."

With Prevx SafeOnline, no configuration is required by customers, and the solution is designed to be easy to understand and very quick to install. Unlike other products, the solution has an integrated anti-malware component and has the ability to secure the user's browser from any malware resident on the user's computer - something key to FirstBank's online banking offering. Since the product has a very small footprint, it does not affect PC performance in any way - even during scanning. This ensures that FirstBank customers can continue to have a great experience when banking online.

Mel Morris, vice president and general manager of Prevx operations at Webroot, explained: "As people browse the Internet, they will visit sites with varying levels of security. So while they might be safe on their bank's website, chances are they'll also visit a site which isn't so well-protected. Therefore, protecting the browser itself is critical - it's the only way to ensure the PC is protected against information-stealing malware as the user moves between sites. We're extremely proud to be working with FirstBank to help protect its customers against cybercrime in all its forms - ensuring they can enjoy all the benefits of online banking without the fear of becoming yet another victim of online fraud."
