WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by the office of Texas Rep. Bill Flores:
U.S. Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) released the following statement today regarding his vote for H.R. 1076 to end government funding for NPR, formerly National Public Radio:
"With more than 99 percent of Americans owning a TV and more than 95 being Internet-accessible, it is clear that the mission of ensuring universal access has been fulfilled and government-funded broadcasting is completely unnecessary. Even a former National Public Radio executive recently admitted that the organization 'would be better off in the long run without federal funding.' It's past time that NPR competes in the regular markets for all of its income like all other media organizations.
"In this struggling economy, forcing wasteful or defective government programs onto the backs hard-working American taxpayers is completely unacceptable. That is why I voted today to ban federal funding for NPR. Another vote to cut spending represents another step the House has taken towards putting Americans back to work and putting our economy back on a fiscally sustainable course for the future."
